AI Chatbots Are Everywhere – But Are They Private?

You can't escape it. AI isn't just something from the movies anymore; it's your go-to partner for brainstorming, your coding assistant, and your late-night companion. And one of the most talked-about names lately? Janitor AI. A new wave of people (teenagers, lonely adults, curious techies) is flooding into AI chat platforms for everything from emotional support to explicit roleplay.

It feels almost magical. Talk to a screen, and it talks back like a real human. But behind the scenes? The story is more complicated.

This guide looks at the security risks of using cloud-based AI chatbots. We’ll explain how they collect data, the weak spots in their systems, and the idea of privacy. We’ll give you a realistic idea of how your data is used. Best of all, you’ll get a practical, step-by-step guide to digital self-defence, teaching you to use these powerful tools more safely and securely.

What Is Janitor AI? Why Is It Trending?

Janitor AI is a character-driven chatbot platform. People come to it because it gives them the freedom to create complex personas and role-play with fewer restrictions than most mainstream apps. Writers, night owls, curious minds  – the draw is the same: freedom and flexibility.

But here’s the critical detail most users miss: Janitor AI doesn't have its own brain.

It’s a sleek, beautifully designed interface that acts as a middleman. When you type, it connects you to external Large Language Models (LLMs) from other companies, like OpenAI (the team behind ChatGPT) or providers like KoboldAI.

In other words, Janitor AI is like a custom-built telephone. It has a great design and all the features you could want. But what about the phone line? That's run by a different company, who also monitor it. Your entire conversation goes through their network. This architectural choice is the reason why Janitor AI offers such impressive AI chat experiences, but it also raises significant privacy concerns.

How does it compare to the other big names in the AI chatbot space?

  • Character.AI: The mainstream, very moderated alternative. It has great consistency, but also tighter content filters.
  • Replika: This AI chatbot is intended to be your personal AI companion, with a focus on emotional connection. It is more like a digital friend than a tool for role-playing, so the range of topics it can discuss may seem limited.

The Real Privacy Risks of AI Conversations

The Real Privacy Risks of AI Conversations

Every interaction with an AI leaves a trace. This includes not only the words you type, but also when you typed them, where you were, and how long you stayed. Those little traces add up to create a detailed profile of you, including your habits, interests, and vulnerable moments. Some platforms use this data to 'improve the experience'. Others share it, store it indefinitely or use it to train future models.

The first step to reclaiming your digital privacy is to understand what happens to your words after you press 'Enter'.

How Your Data Is Collected and Used

Every line of an AI chat can be stored. Many platforms, even the ones that feel private, use your conversations to train their models, improve responses, or feed future algorithms. This includes:

  • Account and Personally Identifiable Information (PII): To create an account, users must provide standard registration information, typically at least an email address and a chosen username. Some platforms, like Replika, go further, asking for a user's birth date, pronouns, and work status during setup.
  • Usage Data and Metadata: Beyond the chat itself, these services often log your IP address, the type of device and browser you're using, how long you chat for, and at what times of day. It’s like a digital footprint of your habits.
  • Conversational Content: This is the most sensitive data category. It includes the full transcripts of your chats, the detailed personalities of characters you create, and any personal information you disclose, whether intentionally or not. Platforms like Replika explicitly state they collect sensitive data you might share, such as your sexual orientation or religious beliefs.

While some platforms promise not to use chat content for advertising, they may use other data for marketing. Others use chat content to train their AI models and reserve the right to use data for future advertising.

A major red flag with platforms like Janitor AI is the lack of a clear, accessible privacy policy, leaving users with no legal clarity on how their data is handled by the platform itself.

So, is Janitor AI safe? It depends on what you consider safe. If you're sharing anything you'd hesitate to post publicly, you're taking a gamble.

The Architectural Flaw

A critical vulnerability is that most chatbot front-ends, including Janitor AI, don't run their own AI models (as mentioned above). They're basically just shells that connect to powerful third-party Large Language Models (LLMs) from providers like OpenAI via an API key.

This means that every message you send is sent with the context of the conversation and goes from the chatbot platform (e.g., janitorai.com) to the API provider's (e.g., OpenAI) servers. So, your data is subject to the privacy policies and security practices of at least two separate companies.

This dependency has led to the use of reverse proxies to get around the NSFW ("Not Safe For Work") content filters of mainstream API providers. This might seem like a solution, but it adds another party to the data chain – the proxy provider. This makes it more likely that your conversations will be logged or intercepted.

Security Vulnerabilities and Active Risks

It's not just about your data being stored in a database. Using these chatbots exposes you to very real and active risks:

  • Data Leaks: AI chatbot platforms are juicy targets for hackers. A single breach could expose your email and account details, as well as your full chat histories, which could be used for blackmail, identity theft, or simply to cause embarrassment.
  • Invasive Profiling: Every interaction helps to build a detailed profile of you, including your desires, fears, politics, and fantasies. This profile is a powerful tool, and not just for 'improving the AI'. It can also be used for hyper-targeted advertising, political persuasion, and other manipulations.
  • Weak Account Security: It's shocking how many of these platforms don't have basic security features such as two-factor authentication (2FA). Without 2FA, if your password is stolen or your email is hacked, someone could take over your entire chatbot account and access all its sensitive information instantly.
  • IP Address Logging and Tracking: Logging IP addresses is standard practice. This means that your sessions can be linked to a rough location and usage pattern – another trail of information that you might not want to leave.

Do AI Chatbots Store My Conversations?

Yes. You should assume every chatbot is storing your conversations unless it explicitly states otherwise.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular AI chat platforms and how they handle user data:

Comparative Analysis of Data Collection & Usage Policies

Feature Janitor AI Character.AI Replika
Collects PII (Email/User) Yes Yes Yes
Collects Chat/Content Data Yes Yes Yes
Collects Usage/IP Data Assumed Yes Yes Yes
Staff Can Access Private Chats Unclear (Likely for ToS) Yes (For moderation/ToS) Yes (For moderation/ToS)
Uses Chats for AI Training Depends on API Provider Yes Yes
Shares Data for Advertising Unclear Yes (Future possibility) Yes (Non-chat data only)
Data Storage Location Cloud Cloud Cloud
Official Privacy Policy Not Found / Opaque Yes Yes
End-to-End Encryption No No No

The takeaway? Every time you engage in AI chatting, you're feeding the machine and possibly exposing parts of yourself without even knowing it.

So next time you open an AI chatbot, ask yourself: Would I want this logged, analyzed, and maybe even seen by someone else?

If the answer is no, maybe it’s time to rethink how and with whom you chat online.

How to Stay Safe While Using AI Chatbots

How to Stay Safe While Using AI Chatbots

Because of the privacy risks in the current AI chatbot ecosystem, users can't just rely on the platform providers to protect them. It's really important to be proactive about digital hygiene and using privacy-enhancing technologies to limit your exposure.

Foundational Security Hygiene

Start with the basics (the boring stuff that actually keeps you safe):

  • Share less. Treat every message like it could be public one day. Skip real names, addresses, workplaces, and anything you’d regret seeing on a screenshot.
  • Never use your real email for signups. Don’t sign up for AI platforms using your main email address, especially when registering for lesser-known AI tools. Create email aliases to protect your real address and keep your identity separate.
  • Make every password strong and unique. Use a password manager and avoid reusing logins. Many data leaks happen because people use the same login for everything.
  • Turn on 2FA wherever you can. If the chatbot doesn’t support it, lock down the email or account you use to sign in.
  • Keep devices clean. Update your browser, OS, and extensions. Old software = easy targets.

Advanced Privacy Tips

Once the basics are covered, level up your privacy with a few habits and tools:

  • Clear your chat history. If the platform lets you delete logs, do it regularly. If it doesn’t, that’s a signal about their priorities.
  • Use a VPN. A VPN hides your real IP address (your computer's location) from the services you use. While it's not a magic invisibility cloak, it is an important layer of defence, especially on public Wi-Fi.
  • Read the privacy policy (for real). Look for answers to: Are chats stored? For how long? Used for training? Shared with third parties?
  • Be careful with uploads. Photos and voice clips can enable biometric profiling – don’t share them unless you absolutely trust the platform.
  • Avoid account linking. Requiring Gmail, Facebook, or similar logins is convenient but expands the data trail. Keep identities separeted.

Choose Privacy-Conscious Tools

Not all AI platforms are data-hungry monsters. However, many are intentionally vague about what data is stored, who has access to it, and how long they keep it for. It's up to you to choose the right tool.

  • Go local-first models. The only way to 100% guarantee your conversations are private is to run the AI on your own computer. Use an offline, local-first application (like Jan). The AI model and all your data stay on your machine. Nothing is sent to the cloud.
  • Compartmentalize your use. Take a risk-based approach. Use cloud-based platforms for non-sensitive, unimportant entertainment. For all interactions involving personal information, confidential ideas or private matters, use a local tool.
  • Favor transparency. Choose platforms that clearly explain data retention, model training, and deletion controls – and actually give you those controls.

The Role of Secure Email

Your email address is the anchor of your online identity. Everything ties back to your inbox, from registering for AI chatbots like Janitor AI to recovering accounts and managing online services.

Many users rely on free email services from big tech companies.

Those 'free' services don't come without a cost. You pay with your privacy. Their entire business model is based on analysing data – scanning your email content to create a profile of you, target you with ads and feed their algorithms.

What's more, they hold the encryption keys. This means they have the technical ability to read all your messages. They can access your inbox at any time, either voluntarily or under legal obligation.

Their business model is fundamentally opposed to your privacy.

So what do you do? Don’t just choose any email – choose one that goes further than basic security.
